NYC Homeless Shelter for Gay Youth To Honor Bea Arthur
8/19/09-by Paula Brooks When The Golden Girls, Beatrice Arthur died last April the world lost one of its most talented stars and the LGBT community lost a good friend.
Next month she will be honored for her work helping homeless LGBT youth.
Homelessness is a out of control among LGBT youth, with as many as 25% of LGBT teens who come out finding themselves rejected by their families. Many end up on the streets. According to the National Runaway Switchboard, the likelihood of being a victim of crime increases sevenfold just by virtue of identifying as LGBT. Many of these kids turn to drugs and prostitution as a means of survival.
