Dallas Adult Entertainment: Commander-In-Relief?
Along with expanding women’s rights and establishing Chicago’s Hull House-a restored mansion that serviced economically disadvantaged women and children, and which became a model for more than 400 other houses across America, Jane Addams was a resolute anti-imperialist. As chair of the Women’s Peace Party, president of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, she knew how a nation’s social and cultural environment influenced the individual.
She wrote “unsanitary housing, poisonous sewage, contaminated water, infant mortality, the spread of contagion, adulterated food, impure milk, smoke laden air, ill-ventilated factories, dangerous occupations, juvenile crime, unwholesome crowding, prostitution and drunkenness are the enemies which the modern cities must face and overcome would they survive.” (3) Ignorance, criminality, violence, homelessness, and poverty were not the result of inherent morals, genetic failings, or divine even providence. They were instead, effects of an unhealthy environment filled with inequalities, injustices, and poverty.
