No more astonished than Jon Dahlander, the public information officer for the Dallas Independent School District. On Friday in the afternoon, he received a call from the AJC, alerting him that Dallas’ school system was flagged in the AJC report. He was not asked to respond, but was told the report was going up over the weekend, so he was asked for his cellphone number in case the paper wanted to follow up on Sunday. (I guess to, I dunno, ask “How did THAT nutkick feel?”) He did find an email address for a reporter at the paper so he could quickly give some sort of response. He says two hours later he received a call from NBC Nightly News, asking him to respond to the report. “Respond?” he said. “I haven’t even seen it.” How did NBC Nightly News see it? Because the paper had apparently hired a TV marketing firm, A-1 Broadcast, to pimp the project.

Near where police say a Dallas ISD teacher tried to pick up an undercover officer
With Dallas ISD employees and students enjoying spring break this week, an elementary school teacher apparently used the time off Wednesday to try to pick up an undercover police officer.
Court records show that Felix Garcia, a bilingual teacher at Cowart Elementary School in Oak Cliff, allegedly approached an undercover female Dallas police officer around 1:15 p.m. The teacher met the officer in a parking lot in the the 6900 block of Harry Hines Boulevard, and he offered her money for sex, records state.
Garcia, who joined Dallas ISD in 2004, was charged with prostitution, a Class B misdemeanor, which brings up to a $2,000 fine and up to 180 days in jail. The Dallas County Sheriff’s Department says he was released on $500 bond.

SAN ANTONIO -
A 54-year-old truck driver from San Antonio was charged with murder in connection with the beating death of a prostitute outside of Dallas.
Police said that Kenneth Dunn picked up Stephanie Williams, 43, at a truckstop outside of Dallas in February.
Dunn then fatally beat Williams and dumped her body in an industrial area in east Lubbock, police said. About a week later, Dunn was arrested and charged with murder and is being held on $500,000 bond.
Police said that five other prostitutes have been found dead in the Lubbock area over the past dozen years, police said. Dunn, though, isn’t being ruled out by police as being connected in those cases, but he hasn’t been charged in any of them.
