Did you ever get the feeling when athletes screw up that they’re all working from the same crisis management playbook, and you’re at the point now where you can almost mouth the dialogue along with them like someone who’s watching Bull Durham or Annie Hall for the 1,423rd time? When umpire Tim Joyce painfully confessed to messing up Armando Gallaragga’s perfect game – now that was an unscripted apology. When Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young’s resorted Monday to some familiar old standbys to explain why he swung at a man in a Dallas strip club sometime after 3 a.m. on Sunday?
…
Shoving a guy in a strip club doesn’t make Young the worst guy the NFL has ever seen. But it would be nice if Young could somehow skip the sideshows and settle for being the quarterback and good man he’s shown glimpses of being.

… By attacking a strip club employee whilst drunk at 3:30 a.m., Vince Young gave us all a good step-by-step example of how to sully a reputation he had only relatively recently regained.
Step 1: Go to a strip club at 3:30 a.m. We all know that only positive, constructive things happen at strip clubs at that time of the day.
…
Young played well last season for the Tennessee Titans after earning his job back following a strange sequence of events that included fears from the team that he was going to kill himself. He was on track to getting back to the level he was when he came out of the University of Texas as a winner and the best hope for the Titans. Then he had to go and act stupid in a strip club.

Texas to Stay in the Big 12
by BigpoppaThaShowstoppa | June 15th, 2010
The Big 12 will survive, courtesy of big ol’ Texas.
It got a little scary for a moment there, and may have prompted Vince Young to attack a strip club owner, but the Texas Longhorns are avoiding the move to the PAC 10 and Big 10 and staying in the Big 12.
As soon as Texas said it was staying in the Big 12, followed by pledges from Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M.
“University of Texas President Bill Powers has informed us that the 10 remaining schools in the Big 12 Conference intend to stay together,” Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott said in a statement. “We are excited about the future of the Pac-10 Conference and we will continue to evaluate future expansion opportunities under the guidelines previously set forth by our Presidents and Chancellors.”

Bennett: Young’s Actions “Childish,” “Unprofessional”
On Sunday, Titans’ quarterback and Texas product Vince Young was cited for assault at a Dallas strip club after he appeared to attack a fellow patron who flashed the upside-down hook-em sign. Everyone seems to have an opinion on the matter, but few are as readily visible as that of Martellus Bennett, the Cowboys’ back-up tight end whose presence on Twitter and YouTube have been well-documented for some time now.
Bennett addressed the incident on his Twitter account Monday, in response to a user who asked his opinion on the matter. (All sic).
“Mann I dunno wat 2 say abt VY that was childish & very unprofessional u cant do [expletive] like that when u play qb,” Bennett Tweeted. “He needs better ppl round him.”

With every major sporting event comes the inevitable story of how an influx of prostitutes and sex workers stream into the host location. Here, look, they’re already talking about it for next year’s Super Bowl in Dallas. Further hand-wringing will no doubt come on that issue.
Right now, such concerns center on the World Cup in South Africa, where the country’s Drug Central Authority has stated that it expects 40,000 sex workers to be illegally offering their services over the next month, prompting further worries about the spread of sexually transmitted disease.
South African President Jacob Zuma has requested that his country have a billion condoms available, with FIFA saying it will have them at the ready. England pitched in by providing 42 million of them. But even that may not be enough. At least a few of the teams are doing their part to not use them all up.

Vince Young charged with assault strip club employee
…
Young and several others were speaking in a small room, when the quarterback attacked one of the others. He left before police arrived but was questioned Sunday afternoon. He was charged with a misdemeanor assault citation. The NFL will be looking into the case. “Just made a mistake, made a mistake even being there and let that guy provoke me into what I did,” Young said. “Fell into his hands, what he wanted me to do so he could do what he’s doing now. At the same time, let my lawyers take care of it.” Young said he had been angered by the person making downward Longhorns sign meant to be disrespectful. He said more occurred, but would not go into details. The man who flashed the sign, Creighton Kinchen, is a manager of a Dallas strip club. Young said he did not punch the man, he only pushed him. This comes as bad news for the Ten …

Martellus Bennett rips Vince Young over strip club incident
Posted by Michael David Smith on June 15, 2010 8:06 AM ET
Titans quarterback Vince Young received an assault citation for throwing a punch at a fellow patron of a Dallas strip club, and now he’s receiving criticism from one fellow NFL player: Cowboys tight end Martellus Bennett.
Bennett is a well-known presence on YouTube and Twitter, and he’s never shy about expressing his opinions. He certainly wasn’t shy on Twitter Monday when referring to Young as “childish” and “unprofessional.”
…
Young reportedly went berserk at the strip club when someone flashed an upside down “Hook ‘em Horns” gesture at Young in an attempt to show disrespect to Texas. Bennett likely approves of that gesture; as the Dallas Morning News points out, the two were rivals when Young played at Texas and Bennett played at Texas A&M.

Vince Young apologized to the Titans, his teammates, his family and fans for his role in a fight at a Dallas strip club Sunday night.
Young said he was headed back to his hotel after an autograph session when he decided to go out with a friend.
“Just made a mistake even being there and let that guy provoke me into doing what I did,” said Young, who was not arrested in the case. “Fell into his hands, what he wanted me to do.”
Surveillance video footage released by Dallas police shows Young and several people talking in a small room before the former Texas quarterback attacked a man who had made a downward “Hook ‘em, Horns” sign. Young said more went on, but he wouldn’t go into details.
