Bengals fourth-round pick Geno Atkins said one club, he couldn’t recall which, asked him about his sexual orientation.
“The only unusual question I got was if I was straight or gay,” said Atkins, a defensive tackle from Georgia whose father, Gene, played 10 seasons in the league. “And that was about it.
“’McDonald’s or Burger King?’ I think ‘pillow or blanket?’ was another one. Those were the strange, unusual ones I got. I was like, ‘What does that have to do with football?’ I think they were kind of trying to loosen me up a little bit.”

When I read the news item that Dez Bryant, a wide receiver prospect in this year’s draft, had been asked by Jeff Ireland of the Miami Dolphins if his mother had ever been a prostitute, my immediate reaction was: “Wow, and Bryant didn’t blow his stack. What restraint.”
But I also immediately wondered why Ireland would ask that question. I wanted to know the rest of the story.
Unfortunately, for several days no further detail was forthcoming. Left with such an information void, we began to speculate as to why Ireland would ask such a question. I posited that perhaps he was trying to see how Bryant handles the glare of tough media questions, to gauge his composure. After all, Bryant had had a bumpy ride through his senior season in college, having been suspended for lying to the N.C.A.A. about his relationship with Deion Sanders. Perhaps Ireland simply wanted to see how Bryant had matured with regard to being challenged.

OK, it was bad enough that Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland asked the question in the first place. I don’t care how many hack sportswriters come tumbling out of the woodwork with their ludicrous exegeses of the question’s Context — it was a galactically stupid thing to ask, and the great, tortured lengths that people have gone to justify it is a measure of how much casual dehumanization we’ve come to tolerate in the NFL. (Jeff Ireland is in the business of paying enormous human beings to obliterate other enormous human beings, and if that puts him on a higher moral plane than a woman who may or may not have turned to prostitution to support herself, then I’m Cotton Mather.)

Dez Bryant’s mom was arrested for selling crack in 2009
Angela Bryant’s 15 minutes of fame is still going, more than a week after she became a household name when a Miami Dolphins executive asked her son if his mother was a prostitute in a pre-draft interview.
On the same day that the mother of Dallas Cowboys rookie wide receiver Dez Bryant said she believes Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland owes her an apology, ESPN reports that Angela Bryant was arrested in April 2009 for selling crack cocaine to police informants in Texas. 
In August 2009 she was found guilty of two felony counts relating to possession of a controlled substance and the manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance.  She received a sentence of 10 years’ probation.
In 1997, Angela Bryant was convicted of selling crack cocaine and spent 18 months in jail.

As it is, this conversation is hard enough to track — which is a shocking statement in itself considering how cut-and-dried it seemed to be a week ago when word broke that Ireland, during a pre-draft interview with Bryant, had asked if Bryant’s mom was a prostitute.

If that’s accurate, Ireland wasn’t asking an offensive question. Bryant had just said his dad was a pimp, and his mom worked for his dad. Ireland was merely trying to clarify what Bryant had — presumably — just told him. If you work for a pimp, odds are you’re a prostitute. Although maybe you’re doing other work for him, like cutting the pimp’s grass or filing his pimp paperwork. Ireland wanted to know. So he asked. Allegedly.

Refining and selling coke is rather profitable, so it seems unlikely the now rather matronly Ms Bryant would be inclined to indulge in common prostitution on the side. Family comments continue to filter through Dez’s “lifestyle coach”, the shady David Wells who operates a drug money laundering bail bond company out of Dallas. Wells is a convicted theif disbarred from various organizations he fronted for embezzlement and fraud. His bail bond company was founded under the auspices of the equally shady Texas Senator, Royce West. Someone, probably West, obviously intervened when Angela Bryant was busted for the second time selling crack cocaine to kids last year. She was given a suspended sentence. The first time she got 18 months. DeMaryius Thomas’ mother got a 20 year sentence simply for refusing to testify against a person convicted of selling cocaine.
