So Wiley had an interesting take on the national controversy over Miami Dolphins General Manager Jeff Ireland and his decision (possibly with Parcells’ blessing) to ask former Oklahoma State (and current Dallas Cowboys) receiver Dez Bryant if his mother had ever been a prostitute.

During a pre-draft visit, Jeff Ireland, general manager of the Miami Dolphins, asked (now Dallas Cowboys) wide receiver Dez Bryant if his mother, Angela, is a prostitute.

NFLPA Executive Director Says Team Can’t Go Too Far During Interviews With Prospects

DeMaurice Smith, the executive director of the NFLPA issued a statement on Wednesday afternoon regarding the revelation about Miami’s Jeff Ireland, and his question of Dez Bryant about his mother being a prostitute.
Smith said that when it comes to interviewing draft prospects, teams must be held to the highest standard of integrity and professionalism.
Ireland has since publicly apologized to both the Cowboys and Bryant.
“My job is to find out as much information as possible about a player that I’m considering drafting. Sometimes that leads to asking in-depth questions,” Ireland said through a statement. “Having said that, I talked to Dez Bryant and told him I used poor judgment in one of the questions I asked him. I certainly meant no disrespect and apologized to him.”

NEW YORK (Reuters) – NFL players, who have been held to account over the league’s personal conduct standards, hit back Wednesday when the players union sounded off about the Miami Dolphins’ pre-draft interview of candidate Dez Bryant.
Bryant, the Oklahoma State receiver who was taken 24th overall last Thursday as a first-round choice of the Dallas Cowboys, was asked by Miami general manager Jeff Ireland if his mother was a prostitute.
Ireland issued an apology Tuesday for posing the question about Bryant’s mother, Angela, who had served 18 months in jail for a drug-selling conviction.
“We need to make sure the men of this league are treated as businessmen,” players association chief DeMaurice Smith said in a statement.
“During interviews, our players and prospective players should never be subjected to discrimination or degradation stemming from the biases or misconceptions held by team personnel.

If you haven’t heard, Miami Dolphins General Manager Jeff Ireland was interviewing WR Dez Bryant, who was a potential pick for the Dolphins during the draft. During the interview Ireland reportedly asked Dez Bryant if his mom had ever been a prostitute.
The majority of the coverage on Ireland has been bad and putting him down. What I’m wondering is, who really cares? It is just a question he asked in an interview. I’m not saying that it is acceptable to ask someone that question, but the question is also not worth all of the media coverage and negativity it has received since the news has been released. Sure, it wasn’t exactly a great question to ask, but people are putting him down like he killed someone.

Now, I am not saying that it is totally acceptable to ask somebody if their mom is a prostitute. I am saying that the story was over-covered and not as bad as people made it out to be. He was only trying to get a reaction from Bryant.

But please understand it’s not just Ireland asking inappropriate questions to draft prospects.  This is a LEAGUE WIDE issue, and I have proof considering I wrote about this very same problem two years ago hoping to shed some light on the issue, and understand the reasons why it takes place.
Why does the NFL’s executives, coaches and scouts feel like they can insult, bait, and degrade their future employers, most of whom happen to be African-Americans? Is it because they are paying some of them millions? But wait, does the NHL, MLB or NBA take the same approach to interviewing their future talent pool? And don’t they also pay their talent base millions?
The NFL repeatedly crosses a line, and purposely does it. Just because Ireland asked Bryant if his mother was a prostitute doesn’t mean everyone in the NFL wasn’t talking about it, or trying to dig up the same painful issues that complicated his childhood.
