Back in San Antonio on Wednesday after blowing a chance to finish off Dallas, the seventh-seeded Spurs surrendered their momentum in their first-round series after the Mavs crushed them in Game 5.
The 103-81 victory by Dallas was the most lopsided game in an otherwise riveting series, which San Antonio leads 3-2.
But the Mavs can even things up Thursday in San Antonio if Dallas can finally show why it was the NBA’s best road team all season.
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said he didn’t need to remind his players to not let the series come back home.

Miami general manager Jeff Ireland is a good guy and a well-respected man in the NFL.
Ireland, the Cowboys’ former VP of college and pro scouting, has interviewed thousands of players over the years. Until he interviewed Dez Bryant, the Cowboys’ No. 1 draft pick, Ireland had never asked a player whether his mother was a prostitute.
Clearly, the question was insensitive. On Tuesday night, Ireland admitted that in a statement.
It was the right thing to do.
The reality is that the NFL put Ireland and Bryant in a difficult position.
The money has gotten so huge and the first-round busts so frequent that clubs feel compelled to inquire about every facet of an athlete’s life in a never-ending quest to ensure they don’t draft a player who doesn’t reach his potential.

Dez Bryant, selected as the 24th overall pick by the Dallas Cowboys in the first round of NFL Draft, on Thursday, April 22 in DeSoto, Texas.
A few hours later, Miami Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland issued a statement to explain his regret over the matter. He said in his statement that my job is to find out as much information as possible about a player that I’m considering drafting. Sometimes that leads to asking in-depth questions. He also added that, I talked to Dez Bryant and told him I used poor judgment in one of the questions I asked him. I certainly meant no disrespect and apologized to him. NFL players association hits out at interview question
Wed Apr 28, 2010 4:11pm EDT
By Larry Fine
NEW YORK (Reuters) – NFL players, who have been held to account over the league’s personal conduct standards, hit back Wednesday when the players union sounded off about the Miami Dolphins’ pre-draft interview of candidate Dez Bryant.
Bryant, the Oklahoma State receiver who was taken 24th overall last Thursday as a first-round choice of the Dallas Cowboys, was asked by Miami general manager Jeff Ireland if his mother was a prostitute.
Ireland issued an apology Tuesday for posing the question about Bryant’s mother, Angela, who had served 18 months in jail for a drug-selling conviction.
“We need to make sure the men of this league are treated as businessmen,” players association chief DeMaurice Smith said in a statement.

Miami Dolphins general manager apologizes for asking if player’s mother was a prostitute
April 28, 2010, 4:09PM
Tom Pennington / APDez Bryant hugs his mother, Angela Bryant, after being drafted by the Dallas Cowboys with the 24th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft on Thursday.
As top college athletes prepare for life in the pros, they’re often asked some pretty bizarre questions during the pre-draft interview process. Few, however, have stirred up quite as much controversy as Miami Dolphins General Manager Jeff Ireland asking Dez Bryant if his mother was a prostitute.
…
“No, my mom is not a prostitute,” Bryant told Silver. “I got mad – really mad – but I didn’t show it. I got a lot of questions like that: Does she still do drugs? I sat and answered all of them.”

Staff report
Mike Ditka has weighed in on the Dez Bryant story and he did not disappoint.
Appearing on Miami Herald columnist Dan LeBatard’s radio show Wednesday morning, the former Bears coach was asked if he thought it was inappropriate for an NFL executive to ask a draft prospect if his mother was a prostitute.
Miami GM Jeff Ireland apologized Wednesday, but Ditka was hoping for a little more than that.

“I think the individual who asked that question, somebody ought to whack him in the head,” Ditka said, according to a transcript of the interview on sportsradiointerviews.com. Would Ditka have blamed Bryant had he reached across the table and slapped Ireland? “I wouldn’t have,” he said. “The general manager probably deserved it.” You can listen to the entire interview here.

Is your mother a prostitute?
Now there’s a question you don’t hear every day in a job interview.
But then again, this is another wrinkle out of the NFL draft; a made-for-TV circus that has grown to scream success and popularity — no matter what money-driven madness comes along with it.
And does it ever.
That query, by the way, was apparently popped to Oklahoma State receiver Dez Bryant by Miami Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland during their pre-draft interview. Yahoo reported it Tuesday, Ireland apologized for it, and now the talk show and Internet universes have run wild with the story.
An inappropriate, tasteless, classless question? Sure. Even if Bryant’s mother has a past of legal issues, including jail time for drug sales. Even if its purpose was to measure the poise of a potential rookie receiver — would he keep his cool or perhaps dump a pot of coffee over the head of the general manager?

Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland apologized to Dez Bryant, but did he need to?
Character was a huge issue for the Dolphins in this year’s NFL Draft, as much a part of the well-documented “Parcells mold” as the size-speed combo and a history of productivity.
Yet there are some — OK, many — who believe Dolphins General Manager Jeff Ireland went too far in his efforts to sort out the bad apples. Or at least one possible bad apple in particular.
Me? I’m not so sure.
An article published Tuesday by Yahoo.com’s Michael Silver, a longtime NFL writer, savaged Ireland for his line of questioning in a predraft interview with Cowboys rookie Dez Bryant. Citing a “source close to Bryant,” Silver wrote it was Ireland who asked the controversial receiver from Oklahoma State whether his mother, Angela, was a prostitute.

Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland apologized Tuesday for asking Dez Bryant an inappropriate question during a pre-draft interview.
Ireland noted he used “poor judgment,” but didn’t say what he asked Bryant when the wide receiver met with the team April 1-2.
Yahoo Sports reported earlier Tuesday that Bryant was offended by Ireland asking him if his mother, Angela, was a prostitute.
“No, my mom is not a prostitute,” Bryant said. “I got mad — really mad — but I didn’t show it.”
Bryant’s troubled upbringing led NFL teams to scrutinize the 21-yearold’s personal life before the Cowboys drafted him 24th overall.
