If you haven’t heard, Miami Dolphins General Manager Jeff Ireland was interviewing WR Dez Bryant, who was a potential pick for the Dolphins during the draft. During the interview Ireland reportedly asked Dez Bryant if his mom had ever been a prostitute.
The majority of the coverage on Ireland has been bad and putting him down. What I’m wondering is, who really cares? It is just a question he asked in an interview. I’m not saying that it is acceptable to ask someone that question, but the question is also not worth all of the media coverage and negativity it has received since the news has been released. Sure, it wasn’t exactly a great question to ask, but people are putting him down like he killed someone.
…
Now, I am not saying that it is totally acceptable to ask somebody if their mom is a prostitute. I am saying that the story was over-covered and not as bad as people made it out to be. He was only trying to get a reaction from Bryant.

Now we come to find out that NFL team officials evaluate draft picks based on race, academic achievements, and mom’s sex life.
I understand that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has been infatuated with the league doing everything possible to “protect the shield,” but disrespecting a person in the manner Miami Dolphins General Manager Jeff Ireland did by asking Bryant if his mother was a prostitute goes against the mandate set by America’s most revered sport.
“They asked me if my mom’s a prostitute,” Bryant, the Dallas Cowboys first-round pick told Yahoo! Sports Michael Silver prior to the NFL Draft. “No, my mom is not a prostitute. I got mad—really mad—but I didn’t show it. I got a lot of questions like that: Does she still do drugs? I sat and answered all of them.”

AP via Google:
“My mom is not a prostitute,” Bryant told Yahoo! Sports. As for his reaction to Ireland’s question: “I got mad — really mad — but I didn’t show it.”
NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith said Ireland’s question raised worrisome issues.
“We need to make sure the men of this league are treated as businessmen,” Smith said in a statement. “During interviews, our players and prospective players should never be subjected to discrimination or degradation stemming from the biases or misconceptions held by team personnel.”

William buys counterfeit ID from shady characters in Chinatown; he takes a class in film editing, learning to cut nature films. His needs are few. His connections are nil. He enjoys an odd kind of freedom, having nothing to guide him but his own caprice: In one very funny scene, William sits at a bar, near a woman being bored to death by her date, and silently critiques the man’s pomposity via rolling eyes and dubious looks. The woman is charmed, and so are we (the guy’s a jerk), but the point is that William has no one and nothing to answer to, or for, and thus enjoys a perilous license.
But his presumption that one human being can exist without others is steeped in hubris, and his solitude doesn’t last long: A not-so-chance encounter with a shady character known as the Boss (Josh Lucas) and his curiously gentle henchman, Victor (Martin Donovan), draws William into a world of call girls, cocaine and the Boss’ concubine, Ann (Julianne …

When Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland hilariously asked then-draft prospect Dez Bryant if his mother was a prostitute, I think most of us were impressed with the restraint Bryant showed in not hilariously punching Ireland in his face. Mike Ditka, on the other hand, isn’t “pulling punches” — see what we did there? — about the stupidity of the Chicago Bears ex-ball boy. Yes, Jeff Ireland used to be a Bears ball boy.
“‘Somebody ought to whack him in the head,’ Ditka said of Ireland during an interview on the Dan LeBetard Show 790 the Ticket in Miami. ‘You don’t ask that question. If you think you know it, you know.’”

No, you got it right, Iron Mike: You are supposed to love your mother unconditionally, whether she is a filthy prostitute or not.

MIAMI — Dolphins owner Stephen Ross will “take appropriate actions if necessary” against general manager Jeff Ireland for asking former Oklahoma State receiver Dez Bryant whether his mother was ever a prostitute.
Ireland apologized for the question, and the NFL players union raised concerns Wednesday about discrimination and degradation.
Ross issued a statement saying he’ll look into the matter personally.
“As an owner of many companies and organizations, including the Miami Dolphins, I have always strived to comply with the highest standards in all aspects of my businesses, including recruiting,” Ross said. “In interviewing employees, we always look to obtain relevant and appropriate information in adherence with the best industry practices.”

In a statement issued Wednesday, Ross also noted he would “take appropriate actions if necessary.”
He also noted “I have always strived to comply with the highest standards in all aspects of my businesses, including recruiting.”

Jeff Ireland? Scumbag? No Difference
Tuesday reports surfaced from Michael Silver of Yahoo.com of Miami Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland asking Dallas Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant if his mother was a prostitute in a predraft interview.
Dez Bryant’s slide down to the Cowboys by now has been well documented and had a lot to do with Bryant’s background coming into the draft. Jeff Ireland felt it necessary to ask the young man about his mother, Angela, who went to prison for selling crack cocaine and abused marijuana, PCP and cocaine.
“No, my mom is not a prostitute,” said Bryant, whose background came under a great deal of scrutiny before the draft.
Now I understand that this is just one question in a litany of questions that were probably posed to Bryant. And I’m sure all of those questions were not easy to answer. Furthermore, you would have to be a fool if you are preparing to fork over million of dollars to a college kid who has had a history of outbursts and immaturity and not ask some hard questions.

The NFL is a multi-billion dollar business and the pre-eminent sport in the United States setting television ratings records and selling out stadiums on a highly consistent basis.
The one downfall of the NFL is the image of the sport which creates debate in this country whether the league is played by athletes or by thugs. These questions which were asked are simply a trickle down effect of the recent troubles of big name athletes in the NFL.
Should someone have asked Michael Vick what his opinion of gambling on dogfighting was? How about when Ben Roethlisberger was up to be drafted, should teams have asked about his mother’s untimely death and how it’s affected him? How about Adam Jones, should he have been asked about strip clubs and drinking?
