… I could’ve been his daddy, but the guy in line behind me had the correct change.
Unfortunately, this is what scouting for the NFL draft has come to. During a pre-draft visit, Jeff Ireland asked Bryant whether his mother was a prostitute. It isn’t uncommon for scouts and team personnel to attempt to illicit a reaction from a player to see how they respond to either confrontation or adversity. This certainly seems outside the bounds of good taste. If Bryant would reacted negatively, would anyone hold it against him? Dez did respond:
“No, my mom is not a prostitute,” Bryant told Yahoo! Sports. “I got mad — really mad — but I didn’t show it. I got a lot of questions like that: Does she still do drugs? I sat and answered all of them.”

Jeff Ireland’s Question Displays the Depth of Front Office Insolence
It’s a widely known fact that receiver Dez Bryant met with Dolphins officials in the weeks leading up to the draft. The meeting occurred before Miami inked Brandon Marshall to a long-term contract and the team was still in search of a big-play receiver.
It seemed at the time that if all went well, there was a very realistic shot, with Dez’s stock falling, he could be a possibility for the Dolphins at the No. 12 slot.
What was said during the interview has been kept confidential up until recently. A Yahoo! Sports report surfaced today about one of the questions allegedly asked by the team’s general manager, Jeff Ireland.
Reportedly, Ireland shockingly asked Bryant if his mother had ever been a prostitute.

Here’s a report from staff writer Aida Ahmed:
The colleagues of a cabdriver slain in a drive-by shooting last week hope to send a message with a protest at City Hall this afternoon.
The Somali drivers are angry that Dallas police haven’t charged the two passengers who dropped the mortally wounded driver off on the side of the road after the April 19 shooting.
Bashir Abraham (right), a 30-year-old immigrant from Somalia, was shot after picking up Fidel Retana, 25, and Ezequiel Vasquez, 31, at the XTC Cabaret strip club.
Police say Jose Luis Covarrubias Jr., 21, opened fire on Abraham’s cab with a shotgun, targeting one of the men he had gotten into an argument with at the club. Covarrubias remains at large. Retana and Vasquez then left the driver in the road and drove to a hospital in the cab. Police later found Abraham dead in the street. Neither Retana nor Vasquez suffered life-threatening injuries. The protest will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Dallas City Hall Plaza, 1500 Marilla St.

Jeff Ireland got Cowboys’ permission, then called Dez Bryant
Posted by Michael David Smith on April 27, 2010 7:13 PM ET
It would be hard for any employer to handle a job interview any worse than Miami Dolphins General Manager Jeff Ireland did when he asked Dez Bryant if his mom was a prostitute.
But in issuing an apology to Bryant, Ireland tried to do everything by the book.
That even included strict adherence to the NFL’s tampering rules: According to Calvin Watkins of ESPNDallas.com, Ireland received permission from the Cowboys’ front office to speak with Bryant on Tuesday.
So Ireland may be, as Michael Silver wrote, the “biggest jerk in the history job interviewers” and an “A-List A-hole.” But at least he’s not a violator of the league’s tampering rules.

Miami Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland apologized Tuesday for using “poor judgment” during his line of questioning in an interview with an NFL prospect leading up to this weekend’s draft.
The apology comes in the wake of a report on Yahoo! Sports that cited Ireland as asking Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant if his mother was a prostitute.
Bryant’s background and his mother’s lifestyles have been highly scrutinized by many NFL teams over the last several months, but Bryant said in the Yahoo! Sports article that Miami took the interview process to a different level as a result of the one question.
“I got mad — really mad — but I didn’t show it,” Bryant told the website.
Less than five hours after the story first appeared on the website, Ireland issued a statement that he apologized to Bryant by phone Tuesday as a result.

Dez Bryant was interviewed by Jeff Ireland, the general manager of the Miami Dolphins prior to the NFL draft. According to Yahoo’s Mike Silver, Ireland asked Bryant, “was your mother a prostitute?” Instead of beating the shit out of the former Baylor kicker – which most people would have done – Bryant said just said no. (She came out as a lesbian, sold drugs, and went to jail, but no prostitution.)
After the story broke today, Ireland quickly apologized. The Cowboys play the Dolphins in the preseason, and it’ll probably be televised (Thursday night game). Will the announcers reference this moment?
In other NFL news, JaMarcus Russell is about to get the ax in Oakland, according to ESPN’s John Clayton. Hopefully, he saved some of the $29 million in guaranteed money the Raiders gave him when they took foolishly took him first overall in 2007. Ryan Leaf, you can sleep easy tonight – the second Russell gets cut, he officially becomes the biggest bust in NFL history.

Miami Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland apologized Tuesday to former Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant for asking in a pre-draft interview whether his mother was ever a prostitute.
The question was posed at Bryant’s interview with the Dolphins earlier this month and first surfaced last week when reported by Yahoo! Sports’ Mike Silver. Tuesday, Silver wrote a column identifying Ireland as the offending party.
A few hours after the column appeared, Ireland called Bryant to apologize. The receiver, who was selected by the Dallas Cowboys with the 24th pick in the first round of last weekend’s NFL draft, accepted the apology. He told Silver that he was “really mad” when the question was asked but didn’t show it.
Ireland subsequently released a public statement:
“My job is to find out as much information as possible about a player that I’m consider drafting. Sometimes that leads to asking in-depth questions.”Having said that, I talked to Dez Bryant and told him I used poo …

Dez Bryant, one of the most highly rated rated wide receivers in the 2010 NFL Draft, raised eyebrows last week when he told Yahoo! Sports’ Michael Silver that one team asked him a particularly bizarre question during an interview:
“They asked me if my mom’s a prostitute,” Bryant says, an account that was confirmed by Wells, who attended the meeting. “No, my mom is not a prostitute. I got mad – really mad – but I didn’t show it. I got a lot of questions like that: Does she still do drugs? I sat and answered all of them.”
Today, the identity of Bryant’s questioner has been revealed. Silver reports that Miami Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland extended the tasteless inquiry. According to ESPN Dallas, Ireland apologized to Bryant for using “poor judgment.”

Pre-Draft, Bryant Asked if Mother Was a Prostitute
Before last week’s draft, Dallas Cowboys first round draft pick Dez Bryant expressed frustration over some perceived character questions, which were raised after he was suspended three games into his final season at Oklahoma State for lying to an NCAA investigator.
Bryant said that these questions, particularly those concerning his family, were baseless and irrelevant. In one particular case, though, the line of questioning surpassed any discussion of validity, and entered the absurd–and kind of offensive.
“They asked me if my mom’s a prostitute,” Bryant told Michael Silver of Yahoo! Sports. “No, my mom is not a prostitute. I got mad – really mad – but I didn’t show it. I got a lot of questions like that: Does she still do drugs? I sat and answered all of them.”
