The county is trying to hire as many guards as possible, Price said, but it’s not easy finding the right people. The county is hiring one out of every 10 applicants, he said. Many applicants are being weeded out during the hiring process, which includes a physical and psychological evaluation, Price said.
Harris County has a similar problem with jail crowding. As a result, police in that county have stopped arresting people for traffic violations.
Here in Dallas County, we’ll probably see a plan of action similar to what occurred in 2007.
Back then, prosecutors and judges agreed to plea bargains that let hundreds of low-level offenders out of jail. Most involved defendants charged with state jail felonies — the least-serious felony crime — such as prostitution, burglary and drug possession.
