No one who has ever been to college or met a college student should labor under any grand illusions about the responsibility or decision-making acumen of college kids. But if there were any of those people out there, recent news out of Mississippi State — in which three Bulldogs football recruits have found themselves in hot water for posting Facebook status updates detailing a recruiting-visit trip to a strip club — probably burst that bubble.
In Sports Illustrated, Andy Staples pens an open letter to the nation’s athletic recruits encouraging more social-networking discretion. “Heed this advice, recruits,” Staples cautions. “If you don’t want me calling to ask if you went to a strip club or why you were photographed wearing a gang flag, don’t put it on the Internet. I was young once. I know there are things you’d rather your parents not read.”

… . . The New Jersey Nets are on pace to match the worst team record in NBA history . . . And New Jersey has recently legalized medical marijuana . . . Just saying.
. . . Gee, what a coincidence. Just when the University of Tennessee reaches the we-hate-your-guts stage with Lane Kiffin, details emerge about the coach allegedly crashing his vehicle late at night last August, and walking home.
. . . A former wrestling promoter wants to have only white players in his All-American Basketball Alliance. No word on whether the uniforms will be white sheets.
. . . Three football recruits who visited Mississippi State’s Starkville campus capped off their trips by posting Facebook accounts of their stop at a strip club. Maybe we should call it Stark-naked-ville.

When he launched the Container Store in Dallas in 1978 at the age of 25, his businessman father’s oilmen friends gave him endless grief. (”What? You’re gonna sell empty boxes?!”) From the beginning he reasoned that if employees are happy, the customers and shareholders will be too — and the company gradually grew to 47 stores nationwide.
On this day, as little girls and boys approach the gangly guy at the giant cotton-candy machine — the kids get to press a foot pedal that controls the blast of stuffing — it becomes clear that Build-a-Bear is selling an emotional experience as much as a physical product.
Mothers bring their children after the death of a grandparent or a beloved pet, and parents leaving for Iraq or Afghanistan record their voices in little sound modules they drop into the bears. Today two men bring in the 8-year-old girl they adopted just this morning and whisper that she was abandoned by her mother, a drug-addicted prostitute.

DANVILLE – The Rev. B. Lamont Monford used his speech at Danville’s Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration service as a call to action for the community.
The pastor of the Philippian Missionary Baptist Church in Lima, Ohio, used humor, movie trivia and a Bible story to get the audience into his message.
Monford joked about being given a time frame for his speech and about people always wanting to know where Lima is.
“I tell them, it’s L-I-M-A, lost in middle America,” he said of the town on Interstate 75 north of Dayton.
Monford’s mother was a drug user and a prostitute who was murdered when he was 14. He has used his experiences to write “Valleys to Victories” and earned master’s and doctoral degrees in ministry and founded Mary Alice’s House, a sober living environment, named for his mother.

Almost 47 years have passed since Martin Luther King, Jr. made his famous “I have a dream” speech. The United states and the world have made major strides since that time, but human trafficking still has millions enslaved today.
Chair of the Flathead Valley Martin Luther King Day Community Celebration Reverend Darryl Kistler says, “27 million is almost a number that is beyond anything we can think about. That would be taking every person in Montana and multiplying us by 27 and that’s how many people are involved or enslaved by human trafficking.”
According to the U.S. State Department, trafficking exists in every single U.S. state and around the globe. Between 14,500 and 17,500 people are brought to the U.S. every single year under false pretences. Many are forced into prostitution, manual labor, and other services.

Prostitute DNA Collection to Start Soon
…
DALLAS – Prostitutes in Dallas can soon submit their DNA to a database in case they become victims of violent crime.
Dallas police Lt. Christina Smith said the collection could start soon after the next roundup of area prostitutes area in three weeks.
Dallas police and other local authorities have garnered national attention for their prostitution diversion initiative, which rounds up prostitutes in the area and gives them the option of rehabilitation instead of jail time.
Prostitutes would submit DNA samples voluntarily.
Dallas police say prostitutes are much more likely to be victims of violent crimes than the general public. The new DNA database would help identify prostitutes whose bodies might turn up at a crime scene.
Maythia Hicks, who spent 20 years as a prostitute, said the dangers of prostitution are rampant.

Jack – the second half of the J&J connection that worked so well today. Jack shot 5 of 8 (including a sweet circus shot) and dished out 7 assists in the same playing time as his back up. He played with his happy face today, a tell-tale sign as to the type of game he is going to have.
Johnson – The Amir Army can stand up and be proud today. He had a pretty emphatic block, played very well with 5 fouls, pulled down 8 boards and assisted (!) on Andrea’s dagger. His effort was indicative of what the Raptors did as a team today.
Nesterovic – the only healthy Raptor to not see the floor. Yes, POB was above him on the depth chart. That’s kind of like being at a strip club for 4 hours and not being asked to go for a dance.

Whether the Saints employ a defensive game plan that calls for extensive blitzes or not, defensive end Will Smith will be a critical piece of the pass rush. Many thought Smith should have been selected to the Pro Bowl after getting 13 sacks and an interception this season. By a wide margin, he was the New Orleans defender who produced the most consistent pressure in opponents’ backfields.
Against the Cardinals, Smith will match up frequently against left tackle Jeremy Bridges, a journeyman who is making his fourth appearance on Arizona’s roster since being selected by the Philadelphia Eagles in the sixth round of the 2003 NFL draft.
Although he was a starter for the Carolina Panthers in 2006 and 2007, Bridges was suspended for the first two games of the 2008 season after a woman who worked at a strip club accused him of pointing a gun at her in the club’s parking lot. Since then, Bridges has served primarily as a backup — and he has started four games for Arizona this season after taking over for injured Mike Gandy. It was the first time in his seven-year professional career Bridges had played left tackle.

RALPH BAILEY: Martin Luther King’s courage remains unmatched

It is said that prostitutes and old buildings gain respectability after a period of time but it seems living legends become posthumous targets of ridicule and scrutiny and no one’s character has suffered more than that of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., arguably the most courageous revolutionary this republic has ever seen.
While some of my radio brethren question King’s achievements, insisting we need no national holiday for the fallen minister, King’s undying spirit, commitment to nonviolence and unwavering drive for equal rights in the face of certain assassination cannot be surpassed.
King catapulted to national prominence in the mid-1950s after becoming president of the Montgomery Improvement Association, a group of ministers, church goers and civil rights seekers that cooked up the Rosa Parks-spurred Montgomery Bus Boycott.
