Interview By Justin Monroe. Photograph by Estevan Oriol
Twin directors Albert and Allen Hughes rolled up on the movie industry in 1993 like one of the drive-bys in their classic hood gangster debut, Menace II Society, and shook the world (and anyone who didn’t duck got struck). Part of the early ’90s boom in indie filmmakers, the Hugheses managed to avoid the “hood” yoke (despite subsequent films Dead Presidents and American Pimp) by directing Johnny Depp in From Hell, the 2001 adaptation of Alan Moore’s bloody good graphic novel about Jack the Ripper. Then, as suddenly as they’d appeared, they went their separate ways and dropped off the map.
Now, the 37-year-old brothers have reunited to direct Denzel Washington in The Book of Eli, a futuristic, post-apocalyptic drama that drops in January. We got with the pair for the “Shotcallers” feature in Complex’s December/January issue, and now we’re blessing you with the extended version of the interview. Read on below to hear their insights on the collapse of society, twins, hood cinema, Alan Moore, and the truth behind the infamous “Tupac incident”…

Friddle said the display appeared in her front lawn the morning of Dec. 11. There are lights and stockings and red and gold foil — and a boat dubbed the USS Manfinder with two mannequins dressed in Christmas sweaters and stocking hats. Friddle said the mannequins are obviously meant to be her and her roommate — one has a pony tail knotted similar to way the Lewis wears her hair. A CD plays a recording of the two women talking about how their Christmas sweaters don’t seem to be attracting men, so they might have to wear bikinis instead.
Lisle said that while he pokes fun of his friends for being single, their lifestyle is a huge blessing to others because the women spend so much time and energy working at homeless shelters, with prostitutes in rehabilitation and with programs for the poor. In fact, Friddle said she just passed certification standards to take in foster children. “We can poke fun of two girls in the 30s who are still single, but their identity is in Christ and they’re using where they are right now to serve God,” said Lisle, 33, who is single and owns a landscape construction company.

Sales were explosive. The game was addictively fun and crammed with racy humor, including strippers you could tip (at which point they’d flash their pixelated boobs) and mutant pigs dressed in LAPD-like uniforms. Critics went fairly mad with praise. In most games, the world was static, but

Marshall does something quite different. Nine is the movie adaptation of a Broadway musical that has twice won the Tony Award. That musical is a stage version of 8 1/2. Fellini’s screen alter ego, Guido, is the hero, not some thinly disguised version of Marshall himself.
The movie Nine, in fact, is saturated in Fellini’s own images. At least four sequences are shot-by-shot imitations of 8 1/2. It’s uncanny for anyone who knows the original well.
At the same time, though, Marshall splices in songs, many of them elaborate production numbers. When Guido (Daniel Day-Lewis) remembers his boyhood self leering at a dancing prostitute, Saraghina (Fergie), we jump back and forth between black-and-white images exactly matching the Fellini originals and a hot dance number featuring a chorus line of women beating tambourines against their thighs.

Hurst recalled testing the guns, playing on the Arizona’s baseball team, being just another sailor.
“I don’t have any great sea stories to tell, but I guess it did for me what needed to be done to me,” he said. “I was just an old farm boy – hell, I had absolutely zero sophistication. All I knew was work.”
“I enjoyed it,” Stratton said . “After all was said and done … after I got squared away and made a few friends aboard, and the routine was settled down, everything was kind of kosher.”
Marshall Trimble, Arizona’s official historian, said scandal shattered the Arizona’s routine in 1924, when news broke that a prostitute named Madeline Blair had stowed away on the ship during a cruise, paying the ship’s cook for meals and doing business with sailors.

John Carlen does not rank among Hollywood’s best-known screenwriters; though he’d been working in the business since 1978, when he served as a technical adviser on Ulu Grosbard’s Straight Time, his most famous script was for Nic Cage’s critically savaged directoral debut Sonny starring James Franco. Which is why, perhaps, it has taken several days for news of Carlen’s death last week, at the age of 64 following a stroke, to reach us.
A Friend of Unfair Park sends his Variety obit, which contains intriguing details about the Dallas-born screenwriter’s early life: “According to an obituary submitted by his friend Tracy Quinn, Carlen was born in a Dallas whorehouse, out of which his great-grandmother ran a criminal empire. He spent time as a male prostitute and a bank robber, then served time in prison.” Carlen filled in the details in this wide-ranging interview:

On Monday, Tim Rogers posted a lawsuit that several, um, massage parlors — among them, The Passion, Cleopatra Day Spa and 333 Body Works — brought against the city of Dallas in which they claim they had their certificates of occupancy yanked without due process. Tim also posted a piece from the January D in which former Observer-er Tom Korosec detailing just how the city’s been shutting down these brothels … pardon, massage parlors.
As it turns out, the city didn’t take long to respond to the complaint, in which the “relaxation studios” and “spas” requested a temporary restraining order that would allow them to keep their doors open. You’ll find that response after the jump, but, first, an excerpt from Dallas Caty Attorney Tom Perkins’s follow-up: “The evidence will show that the certificates of occupancy were revoked because each application for a certificate of occupancy did not state that the use would be operated as a massage establishment, nor did the applicant supply a copy of a massage establishment license.” Can’t imagine why.

Forest Mushrooms Gratin and Warm Pencil Thin Asparagus with Fresh Hearts of Palm Slaw are two veggie dishes that had us thinking for a brief moment that going vegetarian might not be so hard after all. Then came the Traditional Greek Mousaka with its comfort-food seduction; the Moroccan Chicken Tagine with tri-color cous cous, dates and almonds in a beautiful piece of stoneware; and Slow Cooked Oxtail with Seared Diver Scallops.
Vegetari-who? Vegetari-what?
For dessert, Churros with a luscious chocolate sauce are simply divine and the Bakalava with Pistachio Ice Cream was a real table-pleaser.
As much as we love everything we tried, we sincerely hope they change the menu again soon, because we can’t wait to be invited back to savor even more options. When the weather’s nice, this place has one rockin’ patio that’s perfect for sipping the night away.
And if you’re lucky (this is Dallas afterall), a real stripper or two will be nearby so you can send a photo to your mom of your night out at the Tapas Bar.

Robert Gomez has been active in Denton music for years and in many different styles from the Latin Pimps to Ormonde to his solo work. He’s now getting active in Denton in a different way. Gomez sat down with me at the Greenhouse to discuss his current projects and passions, and to tell me more about Cuban music than I ever thought to ask.
My Denton Music: What have you been working on lately?
Gomez: I’ve been working on songs for the next record which is based on a work of Robert Owen Butler. It’s a book of poetry called Severance, and they’re all poems about decapitation, 240 words each. I’m thinking about 10 or 11 of them. I’ve got a couple of them done now. One is about Charles H. Stewart, a farmer beheaded by his two teenage daughters in Texas around the turn of the century. The other one is about a chicken beheaded for dinner, written in about 1948. Those are the two I’ve done so far.
…
Gomez: Well, that was the first thing I did in Denton. I had a Mambo band, Rob G, and the Latin Pimps.
