At a press conference at Dallas City Hall this morning, Dr. Bob Sanborn, president and CEO of the Houston-based Children at Risk, ticked off the tragic statistics: Of the reported cases of human trafficking in the U.S., 25 percent of victims were from Texas. During the final few months 2007 alone, Texas had 30 percent of all National Human Trafficking Hotline calls — and 15 percent of those came from Dallas and Fort Worth. (A 149-page study by Shared Hope International last September provided further details concerning children being trafficked as sex slaves in Dallas over the last decade.)
Sanborn estimates that in many cases, false friendships and romances lure these children into human trafficking within 48 hours. And the availability of young runaways and powerless immigrants provides a steady stream of workers in a clandestine and horrendous business; pimps and traffickers can quickly find a replacement as soon as police pick up a child for prostitution. Then, that child is viewed as a criminal, not a victim. Dallas, he said, might want to consider establishing residential shelters for runaways, such as Covenant House for homeless youth in Houston.

Jared Powell, one of the venue’s proprietors, just recently moved from up north to take on this business venture with his buddy Greg. The idea first came to them as Greg frequented the Absolute Space for practicing purposes. They wanted to create a destination for not only established local musicians, but also ones that might just want to jam every once and a while.
While they hope to create a following in time, they want to do so through perhaps archaic means. No street team will be hired, and no fliers will be distributed; Powell explains, “word-of-mouth will be the way we promote our shows, for now at least.”
Although the venue can be found directly in the center of Dallas’ “Red Light District,” as Powell referred to it, they have means to protect their patrons. To go along with their original mysterious notion, the building is guarded by security, making entrance to the room somewhat of a difficult task. But speakeasies aren’t supposed to be “easy” to locate, right?

Next month she will be honored for her work helping homeless LGBT youth.
Homelessness is a out of control among LGBT youth, with as many as 25% of LGBT teens who come out finding themselves rejected by their families. Many end up on the streets. According to the National Runaway Switchboard, the likelihood of being a victim of crime increases sevenfold just by virtue of identifying as LGBT. Many of these kids turn to drugs and prostitution as a means of survival.

Montgomery County police arrested a man they said operated an illegal massage parlor out of his home and fondled his clients while secretly filming them tape.
Rich Frisco, of Lower Providence Township, was arrested Friday and faced several charges including indecent exposure and invasion of privacy.
One of his clients went to police after Frisco allegedly took off his clothes during a session.
Investigators went to Frisco’s home on Monitor Drive in Lower Providence Township and found a hidden camera in a massage room and several tapes. One of the tapes recovered by police apparently showed Frisco naked and fondling one of his victims while she slept.
“We have at least 35 incidents where this occurred,” said Assistant District Attorney Kevin Steele.

LOWER PROVIDENCE TWP., Pa. – August 14, 2009 (WPVI) — Police arrest a man for secretly videotaping massage room clients.
The Lower Providence Township Police Department has charged Richard Frisco with aggravated indecent assault, invasion of privacy, indecent exposure, possession of child pornography, and related offices.
In February 2009, the Lower Providence Township Police Department began an investigation into the activities of Richard Frisco, who was operating an unlicensed massage parlor from his residence in the 3800 block of Monitor Drive, in the Collegeville section of Lower Providence Township.
During a search warrant, detectives found a hidden camera in Frisco’s massage room. The camera was connected to a television in Frisco’s room. THey also recovered numerous VHS tapes and pornographic material.
Lower Providence Township Police Department detectives subsequently reviewed the VHS tapes and learned that Frisco’s clients were being secretly video recorded while undressing in the massage room. In addition, some of the clients were indecently assaulted and/or secretly photographed while receiving massages from Frisco. In the course of the investigation, the clients were identified and interviewed and each indicated they were not aware they were being video recorded nor had they given permission for Frisco to record them.
