The history of Broadway Baptist is closely linked with that of Fort Worth. In 1873, the city’s First Baptist Church had a modest 27-member congregation and met in a building about a half-mile from the infamous Hell’s Half Acre, where gambling and prostitution were rampant. A few church members wanted First Baptist to more aggressively pursue the salvation of the area’s sinners. When they couldn’t convince the others, those members joined with a group that split off from First Baptist in 1882 to found the church that would eventually be renamed Broadway Baptist. Some see it as ironic that the church that was started to fight sin more aggressively now finds itself in trouble for not doing enough to fight sexual “sin” of a very different sort. Others, however, see it as just the first step on Broadway’s path of independent decisions.

Obama’s post-racial election puts the lie to claims that America is racist. It turns Gates into an obsolete, fading spokesman for a civil-rights cause that has triumphed and no longer needs highly-paid demagogic leaders like himself.
But Gates is media savvy and seized a golden opportunity when he saw one.
By screaming racism at an innocent cop whose career he was therefore willing to destroy as a publicity stunt, Gates gained millions of dollars of worldwide publicity and will easily pocket at least an extra million dollars in speaking fees, book deals, and other opportunities this has created.
Gates’ opportunism comes in the dying twilight of poverty pimps and race hustlers like Jackson, Al Sharpton, Democratic politicians of the Obama type, and others who for half a century have enriched and elected themselves by promoting racial polarization, Balkanization, fear, and hatred.

At a press conference at Dallas City Hall this morning, Dr. Bob Sanborn, president and CEO of the Houston-based Children at Risk, ticked off the tragic statistics: Of the reported cases of human trafficking in the U.S., 25 percent of victims were from Texas. During the final few months 2007 alone, Texas had 30 percent of all National Human Trafficking Hotline calls — and 15 percent of those came from Dallas and Fort Worth. (A 149-page study by Shared Hope International last September provided further details concerning children being trafficked as sex slaves in Dallas over the last decade.)
Sanborn estimates that in many cases, false friendships and romances lure these children into human trafficking within 48 hours. And the availability of young runaways and powerless immigrants provides a steady stream of workers in a clandestine and horrendous business; pimps and traffickers can quickly find a replacement as soon as police pick up a child for prostitution. Then, that child is viewed as a criminal, not a victim. Dallas, he said, might want to consider establishing residential shelters for runaways, such as Covenant House for homeless youth in Houston.

Jared Powell, one of the venue’s proprietors, just recently moved from up north to take on this business venture with his buddy Greg. The idea first came to them as Greg frequented the Absolute Space for practicing purposes. They wanted to create a destination for not only established local musicians, but also ones that might just want to jam every once and a while.
While they hope to create a following in time, they want to do so through perhaps archaic means. No street team will be hired, and no fliers will be distributed; Powell explains, “word-of-mouth will be the way we promote our shows, for now at least.”
Although the venue can be found directly in the center of Dallas’ “Red Light District,” as Powell referred to it, they have means to protect their patrons. To go along with their original mysterious notion, the building is guarded by security, making entrance to the room somewhat of a difficult task. But speakeasies aren’t supposed to be “easy” to locate, right?

NYC Homeless Shelter for Gay Youth To Honor Bea Arthur
8/19/09-by Paula Brooks When The Golden Girls, Beatrice Arthur died last April the world lost one of its most talented stars and the LGBT community lost a good friend.
Next month she will be honored for her work helping homeless LGBT youth.
Homelessness is a out of control among LGBT youth, with as many as 25% of LGBT teens who come out finding themselves rejected by their families. Many end up on the streets. According to the National Runaway Switchboard, the likelihood of being a victim of crime increases sevenfold just by virtue of identifying as LGBT. Many of these kids turn to drugs and prostitution as a means of survival.
